LSN Studios Online Senior Clothing Resource
When going to the closet, consider what should be the focal point of your portraits - you or your clothes! Clothing can make or break your final portraits - be sure to select clothing that is appropriate for portraiture! Simple, plain outfits photograph best because they are not distracting. Loud, busy outfits quickly draw the viewers attention away from you. With the obvious exceptions of lettermens jackets, uniforms, or other special outfits, remember this key word - simplicity.
Important points to remember...
Bring your clothing in on hangars, not folded or (gasp!) stuffed into a gym bag! We need to avoid wrinkles!
Go with solid colors only! Stripes, plaids, and other busy patterns are all used by clothing manufacturers to draw attention to the clothes! Dont be a billboard - let us portray YOU!
Wear long sleeves - certain short sleeve or sleeveless outfits expose skin tones that compete for attention with the face.
Select clothing to match your location, prop, and the season.
Dont go out and buy new clothing styles - theyll soon be out of style!
Bring more outfits than you think youll need. With a variety we can help you select the ones that will work best with your locations.
If you are sensitive about your weight - then please dress accordingly. The eye is drawn to lighter tones first, so gravitate towards darker solids. To really guide the eye away from sensitive areas, wear black! Also, the eye is drawn towards contrasts. If you wear a white top and black pants, where is the eye quickly drawn? Right to your waistline where the black and white meet! Dress in a continuous darker tone!
Idea - bring an outfit no one else will have! Look in attics, antique shops, resale stores, and especially your family closets. Does your dad still have his old Beatles-era suit from the 60's? His disco threads from the '70's? How about mom's prom dress? Let's have some fun! Be unique!
Hair - Go with a style youre comfortable with - now is not the time for a new style (as later you might not like it!) Bring a brush, comb, or pick!
Glasses - To eliminate glare and to eliminate distortion of your face, remove the lenses or get a set of empty frames. Bring sunglasses (a must on a sunny day!)
Tans - A body tan is OK, but be aware of exposed tan lines (i.e. when wearing a sundress) Dont specifically tan your face for the benefit of the portrait. Please don't try out a new tanning lotion just before your portraits - you don't want blotchy skin!
NOTE: We have specific guidelines like these because our style of portraiture is timeless and artistic - which is why you came to us! Taking care with respect to your clothing will result in portraits that make you look like a million dollars and wont go out of style!
